What Causes Swelling In The Arm Post Implantation Of A Pacemaker?
Six weeks ago I had a defib and pacemaker implanted. I expericened a small amount of swelling in the left hand almost right away. Now six weeks later the swelling is getting much worse and going the entire length of my left arm. No blood clots or infection can be found. I have elevated and iced with very little success.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. Pace maker wire travels along a vein in chest wall , enters chest & then the heart.Sometimes the wire triggers inflammation in the vein.. slowing flow of blood to heart... this can result back pressure in hand blood vessels & cause swelling. Mostly ballooning of affected vein to open up passage for venous blood to heart & putting a stent to maintain the dilatation is done to relieve such patients...( thus removing basic cause ) Please consult your operating surgeon... for needful management. Thanks.
