What Causes Swelling In Gums After An Ear Infection And Cold?

My 17 month son hashad an ear infection for 2 weeks. First week was just antibiotics for 5 days 2x. Second week was 7 days 3x and ear drops. In second week he also acquired the baby form of a cold sore. But his gums are quite swollen and bleeding and he won't let me in his mouth to clean his gums. Any suggestions?
