Hi, my son sometimes gets a swelling at the side of his neck below the ear. When he presses it air, or sometimes nasty tasting fluid escapes and the lump deflates. What could be causing this. his doctor wants him to make an appointment the next time ity happens but this is impractical.
Hello, Yes it is important that you get consultation when the lump is there. And you do no press the lump. so that proper examination is done. Secondly if the lump is pressed you need to see if there is any opening visible on the skin. If yes then you can get done a sinogram . That is a radiological test in which a dye is injected from the sinus opening and the x ray is taken to see for the tract of the sinus. These could be abnormalities since birth in which the fusion of the structures which make the neck and internal organs is not complete . These are called as branchial sinuses . These need to be operated . They will not cause any problem other than getting infected again and again. In doubt do reply.
