What Causes Swelling At IV Insertion Site On Arm?

I was in the hospital for a few days having back surgery. IV was in my arm throughout my stay. Home a couple days not and my forearm all above the area where the IV went in, is largely swollen. Some of it feels like fluid under the skin and some area is hard. Is this normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
The term given to this problem is Thrombophlebitis. It means that the site of IV canula has caused infection to the underlying vein, which is common if teh canula was retained for more than 3days. It is not fatal and needs an antibiotic ointment for topical application. Hope this was helpful.
