What Causes Swelling And Redness In The Area Of Sutures?

Five days ago my daughter had to get 5 stitches on her hand. We kept it wrapped for the first couple of days, and then uncovered it to get air, but have kept it clean. This afternoon it seems swelled and purplish. Should I take her back to the ER?

Hello,
Welcome to HCM,
Following the suturing these are known to occur as our body responds to the healing process.
Redness and swelling will be there for 5-7 days, if there is any discharge, gaping in the suture or contamination of the wound should be observed, because it may interrupt in wound healing.
If there is a clean wound with small swelling nothing to worry, all these will come down.
After suturing I hope your doctor has given antibiotic coverage and NSAIDs, with this the symptoms will improve.
Thank you.
