What causes swelling and pain on the thumb after an accident?

bent my thumb backward in an accident 4-days ago. Have mobility, can bend & flex with pain, still some swelling, tender to the touch at joint at base of thumb, did not go to the hospital. Possibility of broken bone or torn ligament/tendon?? Do I need to consult a specialist?

Hello,

Your symptoms are suggestive of local inflammation, probably a tendon or a ligament. I don't think that it is a fracture as you can move it.

For this reason, I would recommend avoiding movements, using local ice packs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
