What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Left Elbow?

Hi, Dr. Rynne, I am an ARNP who recently had flu followed by pneumonia (URI), treated with Levaquin, completed 7 day course last Monday. About Thursday, I started to have swelling and loss of ROM (flexion and extension) of my left elbow. On Friday, it was more painful, and I called my rheumatologist for immediate appointment on Monday. It is more inflamed and painful today. I may have septic arthritis in the joint. OK to wait until Monday for joint aspiration? YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It is most likely a condition called bursitis which ma be caused by trauma or by any other irritation of cubital bursa, a small fat pad in elbow. At this point your should rest with elbow, apply ice, take nonsteroid painkilllers and elevate your arm and put elastic compress.

It should lead to symptom improvement within 12 hours. Later, if there is no improvement, it would be advisable to do X-rays and see if fracture exist. Also, hematoma or seroma accumulation may persist and then elbow punction and fluid evacuation should be done by doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
