What Causes Swelling And Pain In Left Ankle After A Injury On Right Rib?

Hi, I am 60 yrs old and one week ago I fell forward, down short steep hard wood stairs, about 5 of them and landed on my right rib cage with right arm under me, and my face. But my legs, particularly my left leg and ankle are still really swollen, black and blue all over and spreading down to my toes and bottom of my foot. Right after the accident my left ankle developed a golf sized ball on the top left, which then dissipated and left two knots that hurt to touch. In addition to the ankle, the front of my leg from my knee to my ankle are also bruised and swollen, still...after a week. Parts of the area are numb, and parts of the area are very painful to touch even the slightest. Now tonight, in an area to the right of my shin, which wasn t even bruised much, is turning red and is hot to the touch, and hurts. Is this a concern? Should I see a doctor? Or just keep elevating my foot with ice as much as possible? Should I be walking around in a mall or go for walks or stay off of it? Thanks, Wendy Nelson

Hi, Wendy Nelson, I understand your concern and I'll try to help you. The fall you took caused trauma in various parts of your body. From your description your ankle may have suffered a sprain or even fracture of the ankle or in one of the leg bones.

Furthermore, redness, pain and local heat suggest that there is a local infection known as celulitis or venous thrombosis.

All these changes are serious and require close and immediate medical supervision. Therefore, I suggest you immediately seek emergency room to set the diagnosis and institute the appropriate treatment of these conditions.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help you. Wish you good health.
