What Causes Swelling And Drooping Of Upper Eyelid Post Injury?

My sister was in a car accident approximately 6 years ago. She struck her right eye on the steering wheel. Her eye was badly bruised and swollen shut for some time. She had a CT scan of the head and facial bones that were both negative. Over the past 5 years, she has experienced intermittent swelling of her right upper eyelid. The upper lid droops, her eyelashes are growing downward and she sometimes has difficulty seeing. She did also have an MRI last year that was negative as well. What could be causing these symptoms?

Hi,

Post injury drooping of upper eyelid (Ptosis) usually is due to injury to levator muscle which holds the upper eye lid up or due to injury to the tendon of this muscle which connects it to upper eye lid. It may also be due to injury to oculomotor nerve which supply to this muscle. Usually injuries to muscles may be detected on an MRI. However, injuries to nerves are not seen in an MRI unless injury is due to structural defect of bone like fracture / dislocation of a bone causing damage to the nerve.
