What Causes Swelling And Discoloration Of Foot, Ankle And Calf?

Hello, My fiances left foot, ankle and calf are severely swollen with discoloration. Red to deep purple. The skin on that leg also has a scaly patch on it about 3 inches around. He has had a bad toenail fungus for years that we have been unable to clear up. Diabetes also runs in his family. I want him to go to the emergency room tonight, he wants to wait until the morning. (We are working out of town) The right foot and leg are also swollen and discolored but not nearly as bad. He wanted me to ask what these symptoms may mean. Thank you, Sarah

Regarding your fiance discoloration and swollen foot ankle and leg at both sides I am suggesting the following differential diagnosis
Cellulitis
Diabetes
Peripheral vascular disease
Myositis
Renal failure
In view of this please let him do the following test
Blood culture
Doppler scan of both legs
Fasting blood sugar
Renal function test
Meanwhile please see the physician with the result and for further expect clinical assessment and adequate drug prescription
