What Causes Swelling And Cramps On The Foot?

bottom of left foot began cramping last night while I was sleeping. Couldn t put weight on it without pain, when I got up this morning I still could not put weight on it without pain, put some heat on it with no relief. It appears to be slightly swollen on around big toe and on bottom of foot. I did not injure it at all and this is the first time this has ever happened.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

You may be having acute attack of gout.In this condition there is increase in blood levels of uric acid which gets deposited in the small joints of foot especially 1st metatarsophalangeal joint. Uric acid forms needle like crystal in small joints which leads to inflammation and pain. Usually deposit occurs acutely and hence pain. I would like to advise blood test for uric acid levels. Keep yourself hydrated with lots of fluids. Ice compression reduces inflammation and pain. Treatment for reducing serum uric acid level should be started if blood levels are high. please consult physician nearby you after report.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
