What Causes Swelling After Removing Bee Sting Below Eyelid?

My two year old son got a bee sting one week ago just below his right eyelid (we made sure the stinger was out and cleaned the area)...he had slight redness and only a small amount of swelling (basically unnoticeable)...and now a week later he woke up with his eye very puffy and swollen around it (almost making his eye closed). He acts like the area is itching as well, but not complaining with any pain. Is this just a normal part of the healing process and nothing to be too concerned with? I have been giving him Benedryl today and doing cool compresses. Should we visit the doctor or am I overreacting?
