What Causes Sudden Right Sided Lip Swelling While Treating Hives?

Two days ago my top lip started to swell from the right side and within a couple hours the entire top lip was swollen. Benedryl didn't have an effect and the swelling slowly subsided and was gone in 24 hours. Fast forward two days and my bottom lip suddenly started to swell from the right side and is quite swollen right now. There were no common foods or environmental factors, even the time of day was different. I occasionally get outbreaks of hives but never anything this intense and they are always gone within a few hours, what could cause this type of swelling and how worried should I be?

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain sudden swelling of the lips that has gone away in few hours and also recurred seems tobe most probably due to ALLERGIC ANGIOEDEMA and is caused due to causes like allergy to any food or medicine while any skin cosmetic or bug bite etc can also be a cause..
You should consult an Allergist and get evaluated and he can advise allergic tests like RAST test, Patch test, Food Challenge test etc to confirm the exact cause for the symptoms..
As of now you can take anti allergics like Allegra or Claritin and also do cool compresses over the lips..
Avoid licking or sucking the lips..
The Allergist can also give you steroid shot if swelling is in excess..
