What Causes Sudden Fainting?

My 22 year old son passed out this morning while I was clipping his toenails. He has Down Syndrome and has never passed out before. He had just showered and preparing for his job. He slumped to the floor and was out for 5 sec. Scared me to death. Was his blood sugar low or what??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. I have seen many cases with similar complaints. As per your history, please find my advice below:

1. First do a full blood count with differential

2. Do ECG/ECHO to rule out cardiac disorders

3. Check Fasting blood sugar and TSH level

4. Check his vital signs like blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and body temperature and record it upto 72 hours.

5. Check cardio vascular clinical sign by your local doctors(Neck artery)

Do what I told if everything is alright then final diagnosis will be vasovagal syncope due to exam only.

Follow-up with me after 10 days time. I hope I was able to address your query. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to write to me.

Wishing you all the best.

Thanks,
Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo
