What Causes Sudden Episodes Of Dizziness And Nausea?

Over the last two weeks, my husband, 47 yrs. old, has had several episodes where he suddenly becomes dizzy, instantly turning pale, sweating, and feeling nauseous. A couple times it has taken him hours of lying there to return to normal, closing his eyes because he feels so dizzy when he opens them. One day he slept almost the entire rest of the day. Tonight when it happened again, he actually started vomiting, then he laid down and has been asleep for the last hour and a half, already. I am concerned that this is something more than a random event. Tonight he was just prepping some dinner when it happened, nothing strenuous, not any reason to become ill.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.. There are certain conditions of the heart such as abnormal rhythm disturbance like paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia which can produce such symptoms. Even carcinoid syndrome may also produce similar features. A cardiac evaluation by a cardiologist or internist is needed. An ECG will be the first thing to check. Sometimes a Holter monitoring of his heart beat may also be required if his diagnosis is not obvious on a simple ECG. If cardiac causes are ruled out then you could investigate for carcinoid though he is very likely to have it. Wishing him a speedy recovery..
