What Causes Stomach Cramps, constipation And Blood In Stools?

Dear Doctors, This is regarding my brother, he is 25 years old, ur mother was diagnozed with colon cancer a month ago and she passed away, she was 59 when she passed, My brothe has been suffering of constipation, stomach cramps and bloud in the stools latley. His stomach is alos bloated. Our GP has asked us to undergo a colonoscopy stating that he might have a polyp in the bowels that is causing all this issues. My question is since we have the disease in the family , is there are a possibility that my brother would be effected with the same disease. Imreally worries, we have the colonoscopy set for 31st Monday.

Hi,

In your case, blood presence in stool doesn’t seem to be something serious. And in most causes of are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps.

These are primarily treated with a stool softener, diet and Sitz baths. If there are some other symptoms such as weight loss or pain or inability to have bowel movements then some further tests should be done. It is common that hard stool leads to bleeding due to fragile hemorrhoids so it is important to soften your stool with an appropriate diet that includes a lot of fluids, probiotics, high fibre food and stool softeners to avoid hard stool and straining.

If there is no improvement in the next few weeks, then tests are required which include colonoscopy and irigography. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
General Surgeon
