I am going on 55 yrs old. Have not had a regular period in over a year. A few bloody discharges. Why am I having terrible cramps. Sometimes the pain wakes me up and or keeps me from falling asleep. They don t come regularly, like once a month. It goes on daily for a while, then nothing for a while.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

What you are describing may be the ovaries throbbing from increased follicle stimulating hormone that can happen around menopause.

However, without more information, and given the pain is severe enough to wake you from sleep, I advise you go in to see your family medicine physician or gynecologist.

They will do a pelvic exam, and if warranted, also order a pelvic ultrasound.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh, General & Family Physician
