What Causes Stabbing Pain In The Head With Stiffness In The Neck?

I have a stabbing pain in my head on the right side right where my neck meets my skull. I ve had the pain for a few days now. It s always gone in the morning but gets worse by the end of the day. Also every day it seems to be getting worse. Right now my neck is stiff on that side, my ear feels like there is a swelling inside it and the pain goes through to the top of my head like there is a pole sticking through my head. Doesn t feel like any headache I ve ever had. So I have no idea what s going on.

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms seem to be related to an occipital neuralgia.

It may be related to a cervical column disorder (like a slipped disk or just degenerative changes).

The fact that this is a new headache, never experienced before, is concerning for a secondary headache.

I recommend consulting with a neurologist for a careful physical examination for neurological signs, a cervical column x ray study and some lab blood tests (complete blood count, PCR, sedimentation rate).

A brain CT scan may be necessary to exclude a possible lesion of the brain (although less possible because your pain is not typical of these disorders, which cause exacerbation of the pain, mainly in the morning).

Meanwhile, I would recommend taking painkillers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr. Aida
