What Causes Spotting During Menopause?

I am 55. I am in Menopause. It has been 1@1/2 years since my last period. Two weeks ago, I had unexplained symptoms of PMS. Four days ago, I started VERY lightly spotting. Mostly only noticed on tissue after peeing. This has been for 4 days. Is this normal?

Hello,

Your symptoms can be due to hormonal changes, infection or some other pathological changes in the genital tract.

I always suggest to my patients that if there is any kind of bleeding or spotting after menopause, it should be completely evaluated to rule out any type of genital tract malignancy.

Please get gynecology checkup done including per speculum and per vaginal examination, to know about cervical erosion or polyp as a cause of your spotting. PAP smear will be of help to know about cytological changes, if any.

USG abdomen and pelvis, will help to know about the structural pathology in the uterus like fibroids or polyps. Also, get diagnostic Hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy done. This will help to know about the endometrial pathology- infection or malignancy if any.

Please seek prescription support from your treating doctor for a broad spectrum antibiotic like Doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for 5 days.

Kindly, follow the below treatment plan:
- Please opt for a healthy diet and regular exercise regimen
- Include more portions of fruits and vegetables and salads in daily diet
- Drink plenty of water in the day
- Avoid refined sugars and deep fried foods and bakery products in the diet
- Please take Iron, Calcium, protein, vitamin B 12, Folic acid, long acting form of vitamin B 6, Vitamin E and Evening Primrose oil supplementation on regular basis for 3 months.
- Use of Phytoestrogens tablet once a day for 30 days will be of help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purushottam Neurgaonkar
