What Causes Sore Throat And Swollen Tonsils?

I have had a sore throat for about a week. I went to the doctor two days ago and was told that it could be new allergies and to take some benedryl I do not have allergies, I do not have a cold either. The doctor said that my tonsils are swollen and purple. What does this mean? I am 32 years old, female.

Hi,

As per your query you have symptoms of sore throat and swollen tonsils which seems to be a bacterial infection leading to tonsillitis.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you consult ENT specialist once for proper examination and to rule out other condition like acid reflux. The doctor may order a blood test and throat swab test to confirm the diagnosis. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin, cephalexin or penicillin) course for around 10 days and vitamin C supplement for quick recovery. For now what you can do is gargling and rinsing with warm saline water, drink plenty of fluids to keep your self hydrate and take ibuprofen (if not allergic) or acetaminophen for pain and inflammation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
