Hi I am a breastfeeding mom and my son is 1 year and a month old now, Since the past few weeks I feel sore nipples during the day and extreme pain while breastfeeding him, also i had my menstural cycle last week but yesterday there was some spotting and then the bleeding (with clots) started, still having now. Is this something normal?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Soreness and pain felt in nipples during breast feeding can be due to infection of the lactiferous ducts and sinuses in the nipples. Infection is common during breast feeding. Other possibility of soreness can be due to a condition known as fibroadenosis. Fibroadenosis is characterised by mastalgia i.e. pain and soreness during menstrual cycles. A clinical assessment is required. In case there is evidence of infection (which is more likely), appropriate antibiotics will be prescribed. Bleeding after menstrual cycles also needs to be investigated by a gynaecologist. An pelvic ultrasound and/ or endometrial curreting will be required to assess the status of endometrium and thus further management can be planned.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
