What Causes Solid Knot At The Back Of The Head?

So two days ago I went tubing (It got choppy) and then to a softball game (I did not get hit in the head at either). The next day I woke up with a walnut sized solid knot on the back of my head at my hairline and to the left. About four inches below that is a swollen lymph node, two inches clockwise from that there is a sore muscle, and finally about an inch up from the knot is something that feels like a zit. Should I be worried?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. The swelling could be due to boil/furuncle/inflammaed lymph node if it is tender. Painless swelling could be sebaceous cyst/normal reactive lymph node/dermoid/epidermoid which got noticed accidentally. All these are benign swellings.

To reach unto some diagnosis, you have to carefully evaluate swelling
: Feel its consistency whether it is firm or soft. Firm to hard swelling could be due to inflamed lymph node/boil/furuncle if tender and dermoid/epidermoid/sebaceous cyst if non tender. Soft swelling could be abscess
: If it is mobile over underlying tissue, it should be non bony swelling. Free skin or mobile skin over swelling suggests lymph node/dermoid/epidermoid.
: Redness, raised temperature over swelling means infection e.g. boil/furuncle.

I think now can correlate your swelling with above findings and reach unto some diagnosis. Management of every swelling differs. For infective swelling, antibiotic therapy with painkillers are prescribed. Dermoid/epidermoid/sebaceous cyst need to be surgically excised.

From your other signs, i think this swelling is either inflammatory or infective. It can only be confirmed after evaluation. You can consult doctor for management of swelling. He might prescribe you antibiotic like co-amoxyclav and anti-inflammatory like Diclofenac sodium for treatment.

Thanks. Take care.
