What Causes Skin Discoloration?

My son who is 21 recently saw a dermatologist for what they believed to be Vitiligo. The Dr. did some blood tests and thought possibly his immune system was considering the skin pigment as a foreign body and was attacking it causing it to be white and discolored from his other skin tone. The Dr. just called and said his thyroid and hormone levels were abnormal so they are sending him to an endocrinologist. He did not ask what the abnormalities were or his numbers . Do you have any suggestions on what they may be looking for ?
