What Causes Shortness Of Breath While On Prednisone For Chest Infection?

My father has emphysema and currently has some kind of chest infection with cold symptoms which has now gone to his head. He has had extreme shortness of breath, can t be bothered doing anything. Doctor has him on predisone and he is going for a chest x ray tomorrow. He has already had 10 20mg tables which don t seem to have done much and he is down for more. Why is he on these tablets?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The use of steroid during chest infection treatment indicates that there is clinical need to control the inflammation at earliest to prevent further damage systemic way. The short breath indicates that either the current therapy of antibiotic is inadequate or there is drug resistant bacteria responsible for the issue. However, once your X-ray is available, kindly share its plates with me during follow up chat for further discussion and guidelines accordingly.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
