What Causes Shortness Of Breath While On Amitriptyline?

hello my name is renee im curently on amitriptyline for depression and nerve main and i have angina or anxity for witch i take nitro glicerine when i started taking the amitriptyline i was on 25mlgs now its 50mlgs and ive had 4 attacks since last night at 11pm i am shaky nervous shortness of breath but i have asthma as well i call nurse link they think i should at least go to emergency room need advice if you can

Hi,

I got your chief complaint. There can be various reasons for shortness of breath in you. These are:
- Asthma as you mentioned and angina.
- Anxiety is one of the causes of breathlessness.
- Drugs like Amitriptyline has serious side effects like shortness of breath and chest pain.

Though you are on drug Amitriptyline for anxiety, however, it can aggravate respiratory symptoms that you already are suffering.

I suggest you meet physician and discuss with him. You may need dose alteration or change of drugs. You further will be examined for chest and heart functions by a physician and may need some investigations like radiograph of the chest and ECG.
