What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Rapid Heart Beats?

I had sudden onset of shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, intense fatigue, low grade fever all the time, night sweats, elevated blood pressure that started about 2 months ago. I am 62. No prior health conditions. Was in between doctors (my former doc of 20+ years had a stroke). Finally saw new doc this past week. He prescribed metoprolol while waiting for test results. He ordered an echocardiogram and full battery of blood tests. He said we needed to get a baseline? Tests in a couple of weeks and follow up in a month. My mother had CHF and presumably died from it. I hadn t considered this but now am a bit concerned. The past couple of days I have been coughing like crazy but thinking its sinus drainage. It is so bad when I am laying down. I hadn t realized how worn out I get from minimal activity. I m kinda worried now. Should I try to get in to see the doc sooner than a month from now?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Reviewing your history it seems that you might be developing CHF due to which you are getting short of breath with palpitations and having nocturnal cough. I would suggest you to get your echocardiography done as soon as possible and do get your BNP levels as well as it is a good indicator of congestive cardiac failure (CHF).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
