What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Pounding Of Heart?

I am 28 years old, I have a resting heart rate of 129 and blood pressure of 156/110. I did not have these problems a few months ago. I have chest pains, and pressure pains in my neck and arms. I have been to the DRs and urgent care, after doing an EKG, CT with contrast, and Xray they sent me home with beta blockers. The beta blockers have helped lower my heart rate but not my blood pressure or pain. I am short of breath and feel my heart pounding when I do mundane tasks such as walking and carrying groceries. I saw a cardiologist and he set me up to do an ECG and wear a monitor. Every nurse that sees me seems really freaked out but the doctor s don t seem concerned. The cardiologist suspects its a virus but I haven t been sick all year. I feel like I m about to have a heart attack all the time. What could this be?

Hi there, your vital signs are definitely abnormal for an otherwise healthy 28 year old person at rest. I am assuming that the CT with contrast was done to rule out a pulmonary embolism, and that the result was negative. Have you had an echocardiogram done? (Viral illnesses that affect the heart can cause problems, and you could have been ill a long time ago before you started having these symptoms). Given the other symptoms you are having though, I would want to make sure that you have seen your general practitioner (in addition to your cardiologist) and endocrine abnormalities have been ruled out: I would start by sending thyroid studies and plasma and urine metanephrines to see if there is an endocrine imbalance that is the cause of these problems. I hope this is helpful to you.
