What Causes Shortness Of Breath After Climbing Stairs?

I walk about 5 hours a day with my job. (Janitor) I can lift things sometimes and climb stairs, etc. My heart rate is weird though. When I’m resting it’s arround 53-56 bpm. I’m 29, 5’11 and about 155-160 lbs. thing is... just getting up it can spike to 90-110. So when I work. Walking going places to places it can go up to 130-140. The problem is when I climb a 3-4 flight of stairs, the thing can go as high as 160-170. I never really feel out if breath when I walk, but I do a little after climbing the stairs. It’s been like that for a little while now. I’ve had that job for years, been walking 4-5 hours for year, 5 days a week. Wondering if it’s “normal” or if something is or could be wrong. Also want to precise that I have a lot of anxiety and takes a small dose of medecine to help me with that. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

At this age and with this good stamina your heart rate should not shoot up this quickly. Going to 170 without a lot of running suddenly is something we should concern about though it may not be serious. So I generally advise such patients to see a cardiologist. He would take a more detailed history and examination. And get an ECG done. After that, he may want to do some other test as well to know exactly what's happening if needed. So just to be very safe I would advise you better talk to your cardiologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
