Hi! My mother had surgery on her shoulder about a month ago and now she is post appendectomy x s 1 week. She is 68y/o and has a HX of HTN and Heart problems. Apparently her renal function was out of wack prior to shoulder surgery, but never addressed and finally addressed with the appendectomy. Function went back to normal before discharge prior to discharge this past Thursday. I didn t mention, the appendectomy ended up not being a normal surgery due to scar tissue being wrapped around organs. Anyway, question for you, she developed shortness of breath while hospitalized due to an overload of IV fluids, developed edema in the bilateral extremities, fluids discontinued obviously and chest x-ray done. No significant findings, but she is home now and the shortness of breath is still present and she describes the feeling as a smothering in her chest. BP is elevated today, last BP 195/98, she takes Lisinopril and another medicine (forgot name) for BP. She is being very stubborn and does not want to call the doctor or return to hospital. She is upset about all the stuff she has been through. Also has C/O weakness. Please advise. I feel like she can have a stroke from the elevated BP, although pain can cause that, but I also know there are risks, such as; DVT, PE that can happen after surgery. I m not trying to DX, but I would like to persuade her to go back to hospital and be checked out.
