What causes short breaths during seizures?

I have a family member, a little boy who is 5. He has been having seizures for about 8 months. They were thinking that he has a mitochondrial disorder and we are waiting on muscle biopsy to come back. He has never recovered since he had his last seizure at home. He has mainly been on a vent and when taken off, they had to put back in about two days later. Now they are saying he will probably never wake up? Discussing long term care. My question is why is able to breath on his own for short periods, but they think he will never wake up?

Hello,

The fact that he is not able to breathe on his own most of the time, could be indicative of persistent seizures. All these seizures, may lead to progressive damage of the brain, which will probably lead to death.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
