What Causes Sharp Pain In The Scalp?

For the last two days I have had sharpe shooting pains in the right parietal area. It feels more like pain in the scalp rather than a headache. Alleve relieves the pain temporarily. I have had no trauma to that area, never had a head injury. No numbness. Occasionally I can illicit the pain with head movement. I am a healthy 63 year old woman.

Hello,

Sharp pain in the scalp on one side is commonly due to cluster headache, migraine or tension headache. If you are hypertensive, control your blood pressure at all cost. Stay well hydrated, take adequate sleep, avoid stress and anxiety. Take home made food and maintain your food intake timing. Since pain is in the right parietal region, it could be indicative of Nummular headache due to arachnoid cysts. Sometimes, trigeminal neuralgia evolves into nummular headache.

You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP/Neurologist to detect the factor causing you discomfort. You will have to get CT, MRI, MRA, ESR, CRP and few blood workouts to get the treatment started. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. In the meantime, you can take acetaminophen, one SOS for relief.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
