What Causes Sharp Pain In Lower Abdomen Followed By Gurgling Sounds In Stomach?

I am a 22 year old female and I occasionally experience sharp pain in the lower abdomen followed by a gurgling sound that temporarily relieves the pressure/pain. I have had these episodes since I could remember, but they ve never been so close together. I had an episode last Saturday that lasted almost 2 hours. I also had an episode last night. It begins as a sharp pain (that literally brings me to my knees; I have an ovarian cyst and it is very similar to the pain I got from the cyst) that will last about a minute followed by a loud gurgling sound that relieves the pain and then I will have about 2-3 minutes of no symptoms and the cycle will start over. Sometimes I will be okay after 30 minutes and sometimes it lasts a few hours. When I have an episode, it literally feels like someone is stabbing me under my belly button and I can t move or talk or even want to breathe because the pain is so intense. I never have normal, daily bowel movements. I actually had to take a laxative on Friday because I had been so stopped up. (helped only a little). During an episode, I have severe hot flashes and nausea. I always sit near a bathroom when this happens because after all the pain, I usually end up having diarrhea for a good thirty minutes or so. It s such a relief if I am able to go. looking for some answers if anyone could help!! thank you in advance!

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

These gurgling sounds with pain could be due to stomach bloating which might cause stomach upset.

So,this stomach upset and bloating is likely due to gastroenteritis or irritable bowel syndrome or acute gastritis but here there is no need to worry as it can be cured by medications and diet.

Your past history of ovarian cyst must also be ruled out but the chances are less due to cyst.

You should go for routine blood tests and stool examination with ultrasound abdomen if not done previously.

Meanwhile, you should take antacids (pantoprazole) available over the counter with antibiotics (ofloxacin with ornidazole) and symptomatic treatment.

The antibiorics are prescription drugs and the nearby GP may prescribe it.

Avoid oily, spicy and non-veg foods for at least 3 to 5 days and must not take alcohol.

You will feel better within 3 to 5 days of this medications.

If symptoms persists then see gastroenterologist who may examine you and will give you further advice accordingly.
