What Causes Sharp Pain Below The Armpit While Coughing?
I have been sick with a viral cold for 2 weeks now. Excessive mucus from my lungs because I am a smoker. 5 days ago I was coughing and felt a sharp pain under my right armpit. Thought I pulled a muscle. Took ibuprofen with little relief and continued on my day. The pain comes and goes. It increases at night but now I sleep with a pillow under my arm. I can no longer have a productive cough because of the pain. I was told by a RN that maybe it could be gas. Started on Gas-X tonight with little relief and lots of belching. After dinner, the pain is increasing once again. Could this be gas, a pulled muscle....I know, I know, I have to quit smoking.

Symptoms suggestive chest infection. It may be episode of Pneumonia or lung fibrosis. You are smoker, considering that you need to do chest X-ray before starting treatment.
