What Causes Sharp Pain Behind The Knee Radiating Down The Calf?

I suddenly had a sharp pain behind my knee, now the pain is running down my calf. I was just taking a step down the stairs. There is no discoloration but I think there might be a small bulge. I do have varicose veins. But this has never happened to me before.

Hi There

After going through your query I understand your concern.

I would like to tell you that common cause of pain in back of the knee with a small bulge ca be because of popliteal synovial cyst or Baker's cyst and usually caused by arthritis or cartilage tear. As you have sharp running pain down your calf , you need a medical evaluation to rule out a more serious cause of your symptoms.

Kindly get an ultrasound knee, x-Ray done and consult with a Physican/Orthopeditian for further management.

Hope to have been helpful.

Kind Regards
Dr. Navneet Bansal
