What Causes Sharp Pain And Swelling In My Arm After Giving Blood For Sugar Test?
Yesterday I went to the HiTech Medical facility to have blood drawn per my doctor's order to determine accurate blood sugar level. I think the phlebotomist who drew the blood hit an artery instead of a vein on my right arm. I noticed that the blood was gushing into the vial instead of the normal slow flow that occurs during a proper blood sampling. Immediately after she removed the needle and applied the band-aid, I noticed an unusual sharp pain in the area of where the blood was drawn. The pain became progressively worse throughout the day. Blood was taken at 7:00 a.m. My arm was greatly swollen. I had extreme difficulty sleeping overnight. When I awoke today I noticed my arm was black and blue where the blood was taken. The pain is not going away. The arm is still swollen. I cannot sleep tonight even though I am taking painkillers.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Devesh Bandil's Response
Hello sir It's tough to be in your spot I agree that you went for a diagnostic Test and suffered more pain well sometimes if you are on blood thinning drugs as aspirin or anticoagulants you may have this kind of problem of swelling and blackish discolouration. You should apply some pressure over the site of aspiration and do warm compress and take anti inflammatory drugs it generally tales 48 to 72 hrs to come back to normal if not feel free to write in again
