Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Sharp Lower Back Pain Upon Leg Movement?
I.m 66 years old and recently fell down and hurt my back. I find it difficult now to lift my foot to go up stairs without causing a sharp pain in my lower back. There is also constant but more of a dull pain there. What type of injury may I have sustained?
Brief Answer: Most likely you had a lumbar disc prolapse that affected nerves of both lower limbs.
Explanation: My opinion is that after you hurt your back, a lumbar disc prolapsed and caused lower spinal cord compression. That condition may manifest by lower back pain, lower limb sensory or motor affection. In some cases, urination and micturition may be involved.
I suggest my patients the following: MRI of the spine to check for soft tissues inflammation and if disc injury happened. The information provided by you is not sufficient to provide a good opinion. If someone comes to me with this condition I would ask them about another medical history as diabetes hypertension. Also if any other orthopedic problems happened before.
Conclusion: I suggest you check with your physician.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahmmad Gamal
