What Causes Severe Weight Loss After Taking Cipro?

My husband was prescribed Cipro for an e.coli bloodborne infection but had to stop after taking the drug for 12 days due to side effects. Now, a week after stopping the drug, he has trouble eating anything and is losing wt very rapidly is very tired and cannot taste what little food he does eat. He has no fever, pain, diarrhea or vomiting but can only sleep and rest. What could be a possible sequela to having taken this drug?

Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
The cause for the trouble in eating and weight loss, tiredness, sleeping always can not be Cipro alone; it could have been due to systemic E. coli infection.
Since you have not given any history of skin or mucosa eruption, your husband needs the following:
Clinical evaluation and examination, preferably by your ENT Surgeon so that Endoscopy can be done to decide the cause for trouble eating.
Also needed ate the following tests:
Blood: Culture and sensitivity, CBC liver, kidney and other functions as may be needed as per the clinical picture.
Upper GI Endoscopy.
Tests of stool and urine.
X-ray of the chest in PA view.
Ultrasonography of the abdomen.
All these things will lead to the proper cause and gives a plan of proper treatment.
