What Causes Severe Vomiting And Diarrhea In A Child?

My daughter (age 6) has experienced over the last four weeks, throwing up and or diarrhea - three times in the last four weeks. It usually only lasts 30 min.-hour and then feels fine and wants to eat. I am concerned only because she has had it so frequently and over the last four weeks with periods of time in between she eats and has normal bowel movements.

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
That sound like gastroenteritis. The cause of her symptoms will have to be investigated and treated for her to get over given the chronic nature of the problem.Possible causes may include: digestive viral, bacterial or parasitic infections, lactose intolerance, artificial sweeteners, chronic gastritis...
I will suggest you see the Doctor for examination and investigations.Test that may help identify the cause of her problem include: stool exam/culture, full blood count, ESR, abdominal ultrasound.A serum electorlyte may as well be requested to evaluate electrolytes imbalances that go with chronic diarrhea and vomiting. In the meantime, i will advise the following:
-Give her oral rehydration salt to replenish water and ions losses
-Zinc tablets to help in intseinal repair
-Fruits like bananas that may help improve on her stool quality
-An anti-diarrheal like imodium if diarrhea frequent
-An anti-emetic like vogalene
-Your Doctor may judge the need for antibiotics after the lab results.
-Drink plenty of clear liquids
-Add semisolid and low-fiber foods gradually
-Avoid certain foods such as dairy products, fatty foods, high-fiber foods
-Consider taking probiotics
Hope this will help
Best regards
