What Causes Severe Vomiting And Constipation?

My wife, 66 years old has experienced severe, violent vomiting and constipation. We are visiting family and she may have eaten more than normal. This scenario of violent vomiting and constipation has been repeated. During the spring, she experienced the most violent vomiting I have ever seen and I took her to the ER. Basically there was no diagnosis or treatment other than some meds to stop the nausea. This happened on two occasions, separated by about six weeks. She is having these same symptoms now.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

She needs to be evaluated for any sub-acute intestinal obstruction episodes as constipation with violent vomiting needs to be worked up for any mechanical obstruction. Abdominal X-ray erect AP may be helpful as well as ultrasound abdomen.

If unremarkable CT scan abdomen may be needed. OGD for upper GI pathologies may also be recommended if others are unremarkable. Treatment will be dependent on the cause. But fluid and sips avoiding solid or heavy foods along with IV hydration if vomiting are frequent to avoid water and electrolytes imbalance may be helpful.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Regards,
