What Causes Severe Upper Left Quadrant Abdominal Pain?

I am a 57 yr. old male, in overall good health, 5 7 --150lbs. I have no fever, no weight loss, no nausea, no heart symptoms and no general fatigue. I do not get enough exercise, I have never smoked, I did drink alcohol up until eight years ago. I had severe heartburn at night which is now relieved by taking Prevacid, one cap qd 30 minutes before eating breakfast. A year ago I started having severe upper left quadrant abdominal pain, relieved by lying down. I had an MRI that didn t show any abnormal findings. I had an upper endoscopy and a colonoscopy. The upper EGD showed a small hiatal hernia with some esophageal varices. The stomach showed small ulcers and a sample later reveled H-pylori, treated with antibiotics. The colonoscopy could not proceed past the upper left portion of the large intestine due to an extreme bend in the intestine they could not get past. The lower colon presented with diverticula with no signs of diverticulosis. I then had a barium x-ray that did not show abnormal results. It s a year later and the pain continues. It s just left of center at the edge of the rib cage. It s more predominant after eating, but also presents during stress or moderate to heavy physical activity. It is no longer relieved by lying down, but diminishes within one to two hours after onset. The pain can be sharp or dull and normally is a 3 on a 1-10 scale. At times the pain seems to be close to the surface and other times it is deeper. It occasionally projects toward the umbilical area from the site of onset. It can also just feel like pressure, as if someone has put their fist under my lower rib. When I palpate the area it does not produce pain or relief of symptoms.

Hi.
Thanks for your query .
Read and understood your problems.
Pain in the left upper quadrant- heart burn on Prevacid - Hiatal hernia with small esophageal varices.- stomach ulcers - H Pylori got treated - colonoscopy failed but barium enema normal -
All your symptoms are most indicative of a condition called Irritable Bowel Syndrome- the IBS.
I hope getting the stress and anxiety controlled and some medicines can cure / help solve the problem.
I find this answer helpful
