What Causes Severe Swelling In The Left Arm?

My mom is going to be 90 in April and her left arm is swollen from the armpit down it feels like fatty feeling inside her arm it doesn t hurt but continues to get more swollen and her hand looks like she is retaining water. She is tiny in stature and her arm started out with just a little lump on her upper arm now its pretty much the whole arm. Do you have any idea what this could be or does it sound dangerous?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptom can be related to phlebitis which is the inflammation of the veins.

I would recommend doing some examinations such as INR level and ultrasound of the arm.

This diagnosis can be dangerous in case of blood clots presence, so i is necessary a physical examination and proper treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
