What Causes Severe Sciatica Pain Despite Taking Tramadol?

I have been diagnosed with sciatica. The source, I think is the piriformis muscle. My dr. prescribed prednisone for 5 days which I have taken and he prescribed Tramadol (1-50 mg. tablet every 4-6 hrs. For pain. I have been trying to walk and do the exercises suggested for sciatica, but the pain is so severe I can t do much of either. The Tramadol hasn t relieved the pain at all. Should I ask my dr. for a stronger or different kind of medication that will address nerve pain? Please advise. Thanks, Jane

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

You could try Gabapentin or Amitryptiline, as these types of medicine typically work for nerve pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
