What Causes Severe Redness On The Tongue?

I am a 67 year old female. What could cause your tongue to be red and raw about 1/4 of the way up from the tip? I thought maybe I had burned it but it has been like this over a month. If I eat anything spicy, salty or hot, it really gets red and irritated even worse.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain a raw red patch over the tongue can be due to:
1.If it is an inflamed raw patch and the papillae [small elevations that contains taste buds] can also be seen then it is Apthous Stomatitis and can be due to deficiency of iron and vitamin B12, stress, hormonal imbalances like hypothyroidism and diabetes, allergies, dry mouth etc..

2. If it is a smooth shiny red patch with kind of whitish borders it can be due to Geographic tongue and is mostly genetic in origin..

You should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated along with description of a detailed medical history..
If stomatitis is suspected he can advise you to get certain investigations like hemoglobin%, blood sugar levels, vitamin B12 levels, hormonal profile done to rule out the underlying cause so that it can be treated and ultimately the tongue will also improve..

If it is geographic tongue only symptomatic treatment can be given to reduce pain and inflammation as it is a self limiting condition and resolve on its own in weeks, months or can even persist for an year..

As of now you can take a supportive treatment to relieve pain and discomfort..
You can gargle with a numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine so that the pain and burning especially during meals is reduced..
You can take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen.
Take a multivitamin tablet daily for one month.
Suck on ice and gargle with cold water for relief..
Avoid spicy and hot foods.
Drink plenty of cold water and maintain a good oral hygiene to prevent secondary infections..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
