What Causes Severe Pain In The Lower Jaw And Chin?

I have a terrible pain in my lower jaw that travels to my chin. I have sort of self diagnosed myself with this facial neuralgia.......my mother had it. However, nothing i do seems to help, it does not go away in a few seconds like hers did, it comes and goes .....now for about 3 days. had it about 2 months ago for 1 day, went to the dentist, ....not teeth. My question is .... is there anything i can do to help with the pain, and WHY DOES IT HURT WORSE WHEN I LIE DOWN AND SEEMS TO EASE UP SOMEWHAT WHEN I M SITTING UP???

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Your symptoms are indicative of Facial Neuralgia only and is commonly known as Trigeminal Neuralgia..
It can cause short episodes of severe shock like pain and can have a number of trigger points like just a touch on affected part, chewing, blow of air etc can even cause a painful attack..
It needs to be examined by a Neurologist and neurotic painkillers like Carbamazipine and Gabapantin are commonly given to resolve pain..
As they are prescription medications therefore you need to get them.prescribed by your physician once the diagnosis is confirmed..
For now you can take Ibuprofen and of it does not relieve take Tramadol..

Hope this information helps..

Regards..
