What Causes Severe Pain In The Ear And Throat?

I have had extreme head pain, ear pain, very painful throat with much difficulty swallowing and teeth pain. I did go to urgent care in my area and had an nose swab and was told I have the flu. The doctor there gave me a prescription for Zpack. I am now on my third day taking this also with codeine cough syrup and still feel the same pain. Fever has been 99.1 - 101.5. I expected feeling better by this time. Have been looking at pneumonia and other topics as alternative diagnosis. Thinking of going back to doctor. Would that be a good thing to do? Very frustrated! I am 66 years old

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms are consistent with flu. Viral infection may cause severe pains and aches but generally resolve itself.

We generally advise to wait up to five days for improvement to occur. So I suggest you should be relaxed and continue with your medicine, the more fluids, paracetamol for pain.

Regarding pneumonia, it is unlikely but Z-pack would take good care of pneumonia even if it is there. So don't worry.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
