What Causes Severe Pain In Fingers After Being Casted For Broken Scaphoid Bone Of Thumb?

I broke the scaphoid bone of thumb on December 26th an avulsion fx which was immobilized with splint until I was casted January 2nd,,, my question is why would it still hurt so bad even in a cast ? I have to wonder if I hurt ligaments or soft tissue cause my fingers are swollen and red but not at cast site? I am taking Advil between hydrocodone but it hurts so bad I want to cry and it keeps me awake

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi there.

You are suffering from plaster disease.
Meaning that the plaster applied is probably too tight.
This is causing the pain and swelling as blood flow is being hindered.

Kindly go back to your orthopedician ang get the plaster cut if necessary.
A second plaster can be applied atfer 2 to 3 days when the swelling subsides.
Till then apply the same splint which you had worn before.

take a good anti inflammatory medicine like Etoricoxib.
Keep the hand elevated in an arm pouch to decrease swelling.

I hope my advice has helped.
Good luck
