What Causes Severe Pain And Numbness In The Left Shoulder?

I woke up with searing pains in my left shoulder. My entire arm was numb and so were my fingers. When my brother tried touching my wrist it just made the pains worse. The more I try using my arm the numbness wears off but the pain in my shoulder stayed. Why?

@ This is in relation with some nerve compression at shoulder level while
sleeping on that side ( without knowing ) .
@ Will come around with certain guidelines
$ Application of heating pad every 6 hourly for 5 - 7 minutes
$ Pain killer tablet every 8 hourly
$ Local application of analgesic spray or ointment 8 hourly
