What Causes Severe Leg Pain?

I am experiencing severe leg pain...it s as if my leg is dying in waves to the point that I have to drag it to get from one point to another. Also in the other leg at night I am awakened with pain that feels as if the nerve is going into a spasm, lasting about 20-30 minutes. I am type 2 diabetic, have hypertension, congenital heart failure, sickle cell hemoglobin C disease and more. What type of doctor do I need to see for the leg problems? Oh yes, I am 68 yrs old.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr. Kalpesh Kavar, Diabetologist.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query.

As you are type 2 diabetic patient, the cause for severe leg pain based on your history could be due to peripheral neuropathy, which is Nerve damage of your leg due to diabetes.

the other reason for leg pain based on your history could be PAD that is due to vascular damage in your legs.

There are certain tests (like Biothesiometer/ vascular Doppler) to be done to find out the exact reason for your leg pain for that I would advice you to consult Diabetologist and do the necessary tests there.

I hope this helps you.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.

Please do understand that some details could be extracted from a detailed history and examination.

Please feel free to ask another query. I would be glad to help you. Looking forward to your return query with the details asked so that I can help you further.
