What Causes Severe Leg Cramps While Having Stage-4 Kidney Disease?

Husband has severe leg cramping. He has stage 4 Kidney disease. Was in a recent motorcycle accident (broken ribs and bruising) has left him sitting (pain medication Hydromorphone), leg swelling from kidney disease has decreased significantly so we stopped his laysix (sp?0) thought he was drying out too fast. Now his legs are all cramped up. Severe pain walking he is okay with legs elevated. Pain medication does not help the cramps.

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Kidney disease patients tend too show electrolyte imbalance more.
Hyponatremia (low sodium) and hypokalemia (low potassium) are very common in stage 4 kidney disease.
And both these are known to cause leg cramps.
So get done serum sodium and potassium levels.
He may need sodium and potassium supplements if they are low.. Don't worry, he will be alright.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your husband. Thanks.
