What Causes Severe Itching On Back, Scalp And Vagina?

My mom is 78 years old. She has been experiencing a lot of itching - on her back-her scalp-her vagina. She has small white bumps on her back. Not all over and not a super excessive amount of them. But a lot of the itching seems to come from those areas. She was prescribed floconizol (sp?) for yeast infection but I don t really think that s what the problem is. It didn t help, regardless. She also has bursitis in one elbow. The swelling is much better but her elbow is bright red and the skin just keeps peeling off of it. She is on antibiotics for infection in that elbow. She is on her 2nd round of them. Her skin is still warm to the touch - although not as bad. I know this seems like a lot of disjointed stuff but I don t know if any medication could cause this itching. She is also much more tired and worn out than even a few weeks ago. I figured it was the normal aging process. But thought I would throw that out there. She has had so much energy all of her life. This just seemed sudden. I don t know what all medications she takes. She does have heart problems and takes baby aspirin and also has a patch she -puts on when she starts to feel any heart pain. I know there aer probably more things I should be telling you and some of things I didn t need to mention at all. Thank you for your time. Carmen Fitzpatrick

Hello,

I can understand your concern. The itching problem and white itchy bumps you are describing indicates towards yeast infection only. Did you start the prescribed medicines? In my opinion, you mother should be started on the Fluconazole prescribed to her and she will surely get benefits with it. As your mother is suffering from different ailments taking lots of medicines and as she is old age, it is common to suffer from fungal infections.

You can also apply topical cream containing Betamethasone Valerate + Clioquinol (Betnovate - C) 2-3 times a day for few days to the area affected by fungal infection. She should wear loose clothes preferably cotton and restrict use of scented soaps, perfumes, bubble baths and hot tubs while keeping general hygiene measures. In addition, she should drink lots of water and fluids and avoid sugar and carbohydrates in diet.

If she does not feel better after completing the medicines, then the white part of the lesion should be sent for the laboratory analysis.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
